Whole-wheat bagels are the healthier choice because they provide a substantial amount of fiber (which helps keep your digestive system healthy), protein, vitamins, minerals and a variety of phytochemicals that improve digestion, reduce inflammation and lower cholesterol. Definitely a healthier snack for kids during school holiday.
The Recipe
Yield: 8-10 bagels
Ingredients for Whole Wheat Bagel:
600g of Bob’s Red Mill 100% Stone Ground Whole Wheat Organic Flour
400ml of warm water
2 ¼ teaspoons instant dry yeast
2 tablespoons molasses sugar
2 teaspoons pink salt
4 teaspoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons of baking soda
Toasted black and white sesame (Optional)
Toppings:
🥑Avocado
🍌Banana
🥜Peanut butter
🥭Mango jam
Steps:
Combine the instant dry yeast, flour, molasses sugar, salt and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer.
Mix on low until there isn't much loose flour left and continue mixing until you get a dough with a smooth surface.
Form the dough into a ball and cover with a towel and let it sit for 20 minutes.
Divide it evenly into 8 to 10 equal pieces. Approximate 120g to 140g each.
Roll each piece of dough into a ball and press the dough ball using your palm. Make a hole in the middle using your thumb and shape it like a bagel. Once you have finished forming all of your bagels, cover with cloth and let it sit for another 10 minutes.
Fill up a large saucepan with water and baking soda. Bring it to a boil and reduce the heat so that the water is at a simmer.
Place 2 bagels into the simmering water and let them cook on each side for about 30 seconds. Flip them over after 30 seconds. Remove the bagels with and place the boiled bagels onto the drying rack.
Top the bagel with sesame while they are still wet.
Continue this process until all of the bagels have been boiled and garnished with optional toppings.
Line your baking rack with baking sheets or you can use baking mat.
Preheat your oven to 210 degrees celcius.
Place the bagels on the baking rack and place it in the middle level of oven.
Bake one side of the bagel for 5 minutes and flip it, let it continue to bake for 15 minutes.
Remove the bagels from the oven and let them cool on a rack. Bagel is ready to serve!
